2018. March 01.

In the first phase of the HUF 100 Million aid program funded by the Association of Towns with County Rights, the households receive heating material, food, hygiene and health care.

The Ukrainian-Russian conflict, internal refugees, economic difficulties and the devaluation of the national currency, in recent years, have made the population of Transcarpathia particularly deprived. With regards to the approximate 150,000 Hungarians living in the region, the Association of Towns with County Rights (MJVSZ) offered HUF 100 million in support of the needy in the autumn of 2017.HIA-Hungary's office in Berehove(Beregszász) has been present in the region for over 20 years and operates a social and development center, this center has been asked to implement the large-scale aid program. In the first phase of the one year aid program that started in December last year, HUF 16.2 million was allocated to support 40 settlements, 675 families received food and hygiene support, while 200 households  received 500 kg bio-briquette for winter heating. Anikó Lévai, Goodwill ambassador of HIA-Hungary, László Lehel, President of HIA-Hungary, Károly Szita, President of the MJVSZ, and János Gerevich, Head of the HIA-Hungary office and Social and Development Center of HIA-Hungary In Berehove, gave aid packages to a large family of nine children in Berehove, and an elderly lady living alone in Asztély.

The aid packages that were mostly delivered before Christmas provided great assistance to families and elderly in need by covering basic needs. It was heartwarming to hear the kind words of gratitude at the time when the donation was given, for the support, care and good wishes, from Hungary Assistance packages were distributed by the HIA Hungary staff through local social workers who have direct contact with every family in need, especially older people. Food and hygiene packages including cooking oil, flour, rice, buckwheat, macaroni, meat pie, crackers, cocoa, paprika, canned meat, jam and washing powder, soap, detergent, disinfectant and shampoo were in the packages for families worth HUF 16,000 and heating material worth HUF 27,000. The list of beneficiaries was compiled on the basis of HIA-Hungary surveys and the database of districts, municipal mayor's offices and social offices, ensuring that the aid reaches every person in need. The well-functioning local contact network of HIA-Hungary with the county educational office, social department, local churches , civil organizations, and the Transcarpathian humanitarian coordination body help aid reach the most deprived target groups.

The 2018 Easter program, planned for one and a half years, with a total value of HUF 100 million, will continue with new distributions, and the support will also help to continue and expand children development programs at the Berehove Center of HIA-Hungary.
